Accommodation help in Mykonos
 

Hi all. I will be travelling to Mykonos with my mother by ferry from Santorini on the 25th June for 4 nights. Some friends have said that they just turned up on the ferry and there were people holding signs for accommodation in villas, rather than pre booking a hotel/villa.
Is this correct and is it a good way to go?

There are usually people who meet the ferries with accomodation offers. The chance you take is on quality and location. Sometimes you may end up in the middle of nowhere. If you don't want to pre-book just look for a room-finder business close to the ferry dock.

We've done this in Paros, Ios, and Tinos. The Mom, 2 teens and me (Granny).. No problems and accom. were just fine. On Mykonos we stayed at Princess of Mykonos for a very reasonable price that we picked up just before leaving Santorini via internet..sort of last minute. If you are flexible (and mom too), the "zimmer people" will be just fine. Adventurous you must be!!!

If you are totally flexible and do not care that much about the accommodation, then finding something through the people waiting for the ferries might be an option.

What if they take you to an accommodation that you won't like at all?
Have done it often on Mykonos and other islands as a student and ended up in rooms that were on the top of hills and in the middle of nowhere..... ( when owner said 5 minutes from the harbour....lol). As a student i didn't care that much, but i wouldn't do it now.

I think pre booking is the most convenient way.

The first time I tried that at Mykonos I ended on top of the hill as well — an easy walk down to the harbour, but tough going back to the room. :-D The next time I went to Mykonos I told the people who were waiting at the docks that I wanted to stay near Lakka Square. I was shown two rooms, the first I didn't like, but the second turned out to be perfect.

Not everyone likes that level of uncertainty, so a lot depends upon how adventurous you and your mother are. ;-)

My lesson was to learn a bit about the layout of the town, and ask lots of questions before agreeing to a room. Worst case scenario is: if you don't like the room you can refuse, and have to find something else on your own. You can also stay one night and find something better the next day.

That was exactly my experience as well....
The second time i found THE perfect room near Lakka Square, the owner also owned a mini market at Lakka Square... and even gave me small discounts :)

The first time we ( 10 students) ended up on the top of a hill in Agios Stefanos.... that was really the last house...
We double checked if we had everything we needed before leaving in the morning, since climbing back to the room was a hard thing to do... ;)

Lesson was learned after that.... :)

My first room was up the hill directly back from the old harbour. I remember passing a windmill (not the five windmills) about half way up. I made sure I had everything needed before leaving the room each day, because there was no going back until bedtime. I suppose I could have taken a taxi, but that didn't fit with my budget. :-))
