Accommodation for a week in Umbria?
 

We need three bedrooms for 5 people for a week in Perugia or other interesting Umbrian base. Any suggestions for an apartment or such ?

We stayed here about 2 years ago. The villa is perfect and very well equipped. You do need a car, however.

Peteralan - If "or such" in your last sentence means you might go for a small family-run hotel, we just returned from an 8 day stay at the Palazzo Brunamonti in the gorgeous sweet little town of Bevagna and I have only raves for it.

It's a small world - I stayed at the same villa s SloJan2! I agree it is lovely. We were there in spring and could not take advantage of the pool.

Peteralan - Palazzo Brunamonti is in the small quaint beautiful town of Bevagna. Bevagna is right smack in the middly of Umbria so it makes for a good place to base to see other cities as well. It is fairly easy to get onto the small highway to Perugia from there and it takes about 25-30 minutes. Once you are IN Perugia though, which is the largest city we visited in our trip, it is quite complicated and you really need a good map and good directions (both of which we had from our hotel).

FWIW, buried in the depths of Slowtrav is a turn by turn direction to a big parking deck in Perugia, a notoriously difficult city to negotiate. The deck puts you near the series of escalators up to centro. Worth looking for.

Yup, that's the parking lot we actually managed to get to !!!

I don't have a suggestion of specific lodging as we stayed in a more expensive hotel but I want to cast a vote for Bevagna. It's small, not overrun with tourists, gorgeous and centrally located

Feasible, yes. Convenient, maybe not.

The bus station is at the train station in Foligno. You can choose train or bus for Foligno-Perugia.

Believe me, I don't think there is anyone more nervous and apprehensive than my when it comes to driving into a large-ish Italian (or any other for that matter) city. As was said before, not convenient to leave the car and get to Perugia with alternative method. Make sure you are armed with a good map and good directions from someone who knows. and brave it with the car!!

I totally lucked out in Perugia, or else it was my innate sense of direction. Drove all over it, into it and out of it, many times during two trips to Umbria totalling 5 weeks in 2006. That said, it's said it's a real bear to get around in, so beware.

I rented a wonderful apartment for about 300 euro a week from Ideale Vacanze in Paciano, about 20 minutes from Chiusi, both times I was there. Loved the place. The price was right, I loved the village, it was an easy drive to Spello and Orvieto and Cortona and Chiusi and Assisi and Pienza and loads of other smaller, wonderful towns.

In early October, we spent four nights at a lovely new B&B near Bevegna, Genius Loci. It is run by a charming and helpful young Italian man, trained in the hotel industry. His mother is originally American, so his English is quite good. It overlooks vinyards and beautiful rolling hills. There is a pool on the property. The rooms are attractive. They even have a small winery on the property. You may want to consider this one.
