Planning about 3 days in Paris in early September -is there any self - catering accommodation for that short a time for 4 adults or any recommendations for hotels about 3 or 4 star.

You haven't given very much information here...do you have a preference on arrondisement?

If you are looking for a hotel that will suite more American tastes, both the Westin and the Hotel-Intercontinental Le Grand are very nice and well located. The Intercontinental is right by Opera Garnier and the Grand Magasins. The Westin is closer to Place de la Concorde. We stayed at the Intercontinental a few years back and enjoyed it. Also the rooms are a little larger than the usual Paris hotel. We quite enjoyed the hotel bar and the restaurant at the hotel is very good.

The choices are really endless so if you can give more info on what you are looking for, you will get better information.

As September is the busiest month of the year for hotels in Paris, finding a 3 day availability for an apartment might be difficult. You might find very few discounted hotel rooms during this period. The best method in finding suitable accommodations during September might be to research hotels which are recommended in the Michelin Red guide or on evaluation website such as this one or similar.

Do not rely on stars alone for an accurate indication of what any given hotel might offer. The French star system is very quantitative and not really an indication of overall suitability for many travelers. Room prices will give you a better idea of what a hotel has to offer, three star hotels are not necessarily cheaper than four star and there are many two star hotels I might find more comfortable than three or even four star properties.

Personally, I think the French hotel star rating system is pretty accurate and a good indication of what you get. YOu just have to be familiar with what that means in Europe, I guess, or at least France (although not too different from other countries I've been in). I think price is more an indication of real estate costs and area of Paris than differences in hotel quality, at least within any reasonable comparable range. I have never stayed in a 2* hotel in any place in France (or Europe) that was as "comfortable" as a 4*, so I wouldn't count on that. SO while some people may feel that way, I bet most do not (that 2* hotels are going to be as good as a 4*).

I would read some reviews somewhere of the hotel selected, of course.

In general, hardly any places will rent an apt for 3 days anyway, September or not, but I'm sure September makes it worse. I can only remember seeing one agency that did that but I can't remember its name, unfortunately.

Christina - you have completely misinterpreted my post. Nowhere, not here or elsewhere, have I ever written that <i>2* hotels are going to be as good as a 4*</i>, though the possibility remains. The French star system is based upon a checklist of items, many having nothing to do with charm, location, taste or other subjective features which can have a great deal to do with comfort and suitability. I am simply saying that price is a better overall indication of what a hotel has to offer than does stars and that visitors should not select hotels on stars alone. When asking about hotels, a poster´s interest may be better served if he offers a budget window, preferably in euros, rather than simply stating that he wants a three or a four star hotel.

I might suggest that the OP do a search for Right Bank Hotel and Left Bank Hotel, in order to get an idea of recommended hotels/prices from experts here.

A budget number would also help.

A browse though VRBO might give some idea of appartment availability. There was a recent thread here on appartment agencies, so that would help. A quick scan through a few agencies might show how availability looks. One week is a typical rental period, so renting for less time, in a busy month....
