Accomm - Rheingau

Sorry this is 6th attempt to post message on this site. It doesn't want to accept whole message in one go, so I'll have to send it in instalments.
1. Usually I don't prebook accomm but arrive in a town or village before Tourist Office closes each day and seek accomm through them. But next trip I arrive Frankfurt mid-pm, and it'll be 5pm before I clear Customs and hire car formalities.
I'll have flown in from Bali so won't want to drive too far. Thinking of Rudesheim, Assmannshausen, Lorch, Limburg or (if Rhine ferry operates Sat pm) Bacharach, Oberwesel or Boppard. Any suggestions?

Great - that message got through! Here is the rest of it:
2. To complicate things, I'm from NZ where exchange rate works to my disadvantage. I read with envy Fodorite comments on Hotel Cafe Post Assmannshausen, but, while 41-67 euros p/person p/night translates to a comfortable $50-$75 p/person p/night for Americans, it's a crippling $115-$165 p/person p/night for me. In past I have used family-run pensions or "privatzimmer" which are good because you meet ordinary Germans that way, but these are difficult to prebook because guidebooks and websites concentrate on hotels and guesthouses.
Are there any Fodorites who have experience with this type of accomm who can suggest places to stay in the previously-mentioned localities?
Thanks

We usually stay at the Hotel Cafe Post in Assmanshausen. It's not expensive (by our standards, of course) and it's clean, comfortable and a great location along the river. It's maybe 20 minutes from the airport.

You can try that or check out some others at: http://www.loreleytal.com/

Best of luck.

Hi!
I'm Australian and frequently visit Germany.

My preferred type of accommodation is the "Ferienwohnung" or holiday apartment. This is a spacious, self-contained, fully-equipped unit that can sleep two to four and often more people. It is usually attached to a private home.

There is one of these listed on the Net for Oberwesel which gives its email address. The cost is 35 Euros a night for two people and 10E extra for each additional guest.

I can not give you a recommendation for this particular place, but I can say I have never yet been disapppointed. The owners are without exception friendly, and informative about their region, and the unit is always in tip-top condition, with linen etc. The only catch is that the minimum period of rental is usually four nights.

If you want to go ahead with this you can pre-book by emailing them at:
<[email protected]>

If you have trouble you could try "Oberwesel" on Google, as I did, and it will bring up the official site for the town, showing all types of accommodation from private rooms upwards.

Another thing - I just noticed you were talking about getting a car ferry across the Rhine.

Coming from Frankfurt you should cross by the bridge at Wiesbaden and travel up the western side of the river from there to reach Oberwesel.

If you decide to travel up the eastern side of the Rhine, there is a car ferry at Bingen. The cost is 3.40 Euros. Assmanshausen's Hotel Cafe Post is off the ferry and to the left a couple of miles. Enjoy your trip!
