Accessible Room in Amsterdam

Last couple of times we have stayed in great little places - close to the canals, but with steep, narrow steps. Now one of us has a bad knee that won't bend after an operation that didn't work. Can do wide shallow steps one at a time - but no way the stairs in A'Dam. Arriving at airport - planned to take train to Main Station (as always) and then leaving out by ship. Any suggestions about a place close to the Station that's fairly quiet,, non-smoking - a great breakfast? And a ground floor room or a (gasp) elevator? I KNOW that there are other people with a mobility issue. Where do they stay? (Oh - and here's the kicker - less than $200 USD)
Thanks for your help! Fordor has always helped me out.

Ok so it has no atmosphere but we stayed at the HOTEL IBIS AMSTERDAM CENTRE right next to the station. They have an elevator and the rooms are fine. It is close to trams for exploring and it was cheap when we visited. I found it on Wotif.

We bid on Priceline. I don't have a mobility issue but I liked the price. I'm sure you can find a great hotel for under $200.

The other thing I liked about Priceline, is that the rate of the room was not going to change.

If you are leaving by ship then consider the Mövenpick, close to the station and the Cruise terminal., and with easy access into the city. Might be over your price range, but worth a try.

Otherwise there are plenty of other modern hotels with lifts in Amsterdam.

I know your issue is not with wheelchair accesibility, but I had the worst time finding a wheelchair accesible room in Amsterdam for less than $200/night. For a country that thinks of themselves so open and welcoming, Amsterdam truly does not embraces that concept well when it comes to accesibility issues. I even talk to a Government person from the Dept of Tourism about it. He acknowledged this and cited the unique architecture and streets layout not easy "work-arounds" (and no, wheelchairs on the bike's lane is not the best, safest scenario). I stayed a bit far from the city centre at a Golden Tulip Zaandam next to train station Zaandam, which will take you to City centre in 10 minutes or so. Price was good; hotel was fantastic, room was huge and comfortable.

Thank you for your replies. I do appreciate your taking the time. Yes finding accesible friendly rooms is a particular challenge in Amsterdam!
We are staying on the Canal in a tiny eight room house that does have an elevator and the manager assured me that it would be appropriate for us.
I'll be writing a TR after our trip and will let you know how it worked out.
