Accessible in Capri

We will be on a Mediterranean Cruise and are hoping to go to Capril. We are also travelling with our handicapped son and were wondering how accessible Capri would be. We will probably be doing the trip through the ship but I wondered if we would encounter any difficulty with my son. I know you take a boat or ferry there but is it possible to take a taxi to the top instead of the tram? Please advise. My son is able to walk with assistance and we have a travel wheelchair that is collapsible.

hi noronha-
I have no direct experience in negotiating Capri with a wheelchair, but in other places, I do, ecause my late father was in wheelchair for several years.
I think you can have a lovely time on Capri with your son.
I have been a number of times, and there are many Taxis always at the port who wait to take people "to the top". If you are arriving by ferry, there will be some challenges regarding getting onto the dock, which may be by way of a narrow ramp, then a walk along the dockside to the Taxi area, (which is paved and not too hard for a wheelchair), but I am sure people will be very willing to help you out. If you are doing your trip through the ship, they will have some information, but as a plan B, it may be good to try to get some recommendations of private guides for the island from one of the Cruise websites, such as Cruisecritic:

I wish you and your son an amazing and memorable trip!

Could someone tell me how far it would be from the cruiseship to get tickets for the Hydrofoil to Capri and what is the cost to go to Capri? Thanks
Also, any idea of the cost of the taxi ride to Capri once you get there from the dock?

I assume the crusie ship is docking at Naples? If so then you will probably be very close to where you purchase tickets to Capri - I think you can disembark from your ship and make a short walk (5 minutes)along the quay to where they are selling the tickets - there will be several windows/lines to choose from. You may not want to purchase round trip tickets but wait to get your return tickets on Capri so you have more control over the return time. You might also want to consider taking a taxi tour of Capri instead of just going up to the piazetta. Capri is lovel; many flowers, stunning villas, charming gardens and cottages, plus the amazing sea views. I think if you just go to the town of Capri you will miss some of the loveliness of the island. Plus it will be very crowded and maybe difficult for your son to move around freely. But if you just want to stay in Capri town there is plenty to do. Major league shopping!($$$$!), a pedestrian only zone where you can explore some of the residential/hotel area (not sure how many steps you may encounter tho, at least some)and quite a few restaurants. We like LaGemma - it has wonderful views and a great antipasta buffet. A taxi tour could take you to Capri, then up to Anacapri (what a ride!)and probably also down to where you can see the boats heading in and out of the Blue Grotto. Not sure about cost - maybe 40E, but maybe that is per person. It would probably be cheaper than shore excursion bought thru the boat tho. Have a wonderful day on Capri!

Noronha - Fares to Capri are:

€ 12.00 - hydrofoil
€ 10.50 - fast ferry
€ 5.60 - standard ferry

You can find details/ timetables on:

http://www.capri.net/salsa/lang/en/page/transport.html

A taxi up to Capri town should be no more than about € 10.00.

Or ... there are regular buses as well as the funicular.

Hope this helps ...

Steve
