Are shorts acceptable attire for men in Turkey?

My husband and I went to Turkey in the time we got that far East, shorts just seemed inappropriate for the places we were seeing. Granted, it was hot and we both would have loved to be wearing practically nothing. But I can't even remember seeing anyone else in shorts in Istanbul or Izmir where we went. It was more prevalent in Ephasus which had a very high concentration of tourists from all over the world, was outdoors and required much walking in the heat.

I was surprised that in the Blue Mosque in Istanbul they didn't require women to wear a scarf or other head covering...but I did out of respect.

I don't think shorts are ok for the mosques, and they're generally not considered ok attire for most cathedrals in Europe either. Just depends on the place.

Happy travels,

I also went in 2003. I carried a scarf to put over my head at all mosques and attempted to dress modestly. Shorts really would have looked out of place most places we went.

We went to Turkey in 2003 and toured quite extensively in the western part. We stayed with native Turks and my husband wore shorts almost everywhere. Our host did the same as well as his wife and daughter. I carried a scarf for going into mosques.

Have a great trip.
