Accademia Tickets for December??

Hi fellow fodorites,

I'll be on a cruise in December and one of our ports is Florence (Livorno). Friends plan to visit the Accademia while I go off on my own. We have a guide picking us up at the port for the day.

Do you think the lines will be long in early Dec? Can they just show up and have a short wait (under 15 minutes) or should they buy tickets in advance? If in advance, we will have to figure out the timing...unless the tickets are 'open'?

Thanks,

Monica

If they plan to just show up (I always have), they should have the exact cash. In the past, there have been faster lines for cash only. Check for any exhibits during that time as there are often additional entrance fees for the exhibit (mandatory). I've never had to wait 15 minutes, even in high season, but I've never gone early morning (always after lunch).

You can see there is a current exhibition on this link (check to see when it ends).

One year we had a very long wait, so on the next visit we prebooked. And you guessed it - no queue! If time is important, I would advise prebooking. Just in case.

if you pre-book on the phone, you don't pay until you arrive. if when you get there there is no or very little queue, just pay at the desk rather than collecting your reserved tickets, and save the booking fee.

the same applies to the Uffizi.

a few years ago we rented an apartment round the corner from the Accademia, and could see the way in which the queues diminished towards the end of the day.

Thanks for the comments and link!

I'll let them decide but will recommend an afternoon visit. They'll just do the Accademia.
