Abruzzo travel hints

I will be traveling to the Abruzzo area and specifically staying for a week in Lanciano, anyone with recomendations on day trips ? Also what's Lanciano like ?
Thanks

While I haven't been to Lanciano, I've been to other places in Abruzzo, and I recommend renting a car to get around the area. The Eucharistic Miracle is exposed daily in the Sanctuary of the Eucharistic Miracle in Piazza Plebiscito. If you are interested in Catholic shrines, the Holy House of Loreto is a good daytrip up the A14 autostrada and to the south are Padre Pio's shrine at San Giovanni Rotondo, the Shrine of St. Michael the Archangel at Monte San Angelo and the shrine of St. Gerard Majella at Materdomini.

A couple of nice drives would be L'Aquila, a big town, where you can visit...

- San Bernadino
- Fountain of 99 spouts
- Spanish castele (name escapes me)
...and eat great food!

and Sulmona which is a pretty little town famous for Confetti (candy coated almonds available in every possible variety - wonderful!).

While visiting my wife's family's hometown (Cansano) we enjoyed these two towns a lot and would definitely return.

Hope this helps,
John

Grinisa and John thank you for you recommendations, this area of Italy doesn't appear to have many visitors

You'll have a very authentic, tourist- free (American toursists, anyway) Italian experience in this region. I always encourage friends to rent a car while visiting Rome and drive into the mountains of Abruzzo just to get a way from the big city for a day of two.
