I, too, worried about my white "tennies" before going to Europe (mostly because of what I had read o this board.) I also brought along a pair of black Eccos to reduce the chance of offending all of Europe.
Well, I found the Eccos to be uncomfortable after a few days of serious walking even though I had broken them in at home. It was back to the tennies (which I almost didn't bring) and my poor little feet were happy once more. I am pleased to say European civilization appeared to overcome this assault to its senses (no one seemed to notice at all!) By all means wear what you find comfortable and have a great trip! |
My only issue with white tennis shoes on vacation is that they look dirty faster than other colors. I probably wouldn't take them for that reason, choosing grey/black/blue/brown/etc. instead. Also, dark tennis shoes are more versitile, so you can get away with fewer shoes on the trip.
Another issue - pictures with flash. Flash will bounce off white shoes and the shoes can end up becoming the focal point of the picture and screwing up the lighting in the rest of the shot. |
They are a much better choice than flip-flops ...

Hello,
I am heariing that pick pockets target people with white tennis shoes. I plan to get an inexpensive pair of black ones for the sake of security rather than fashion. You just gotta have those tennies for comfort. If you read the warnings on most of the travel sites they suggest a money belt as well. Earthy |
What color of the money belt is in style this summer?
|
Faina, I think they came up with taupe again this year. Go figure.

Jules, I've also seen black ones. Obviously for the more sophisticated and Europeanized among us.
|
Oh dear Kathrine...I just got a pair of ECCOS...now I am concerend that they didn't do so well for you. Leads me to believe I might stick with my black Ryka sneakers.
|
I'm planning on "Bedazzling" mine to give them that haute couture look.

I have a pair of black reebok tennies, both comfortable, and stylish, no marshmallow tootsies!

I agree: it's the large SLR camera that gives you away. When I lived in Rome for several months in the late sixties I gave up carrying my camera - no tiny cameras available then. I have very few photos but wonderful memories of that time! And I must have blended inbecause I had Italian tourists asking me for directions.
