About cars in Austria
 

Hello, I would like to ask about car rental in Austria. Because i am planning a trip to Vienna and then from there to drive around the country. And maybe someone could give me some more places to worth seeing in that beautiful country?

What exactly do you want to know about car renal in Austria?

Would be nice to know aobut the prices, and how easy is to get a rental i mean is there many companies in Austria where i could rent a car? And is there anything else of documents needed as passport and drivers licence?

As one would expect, prices vary so check http://www.kayak.com/cars to get a feel for what is available and how much it is.

You'll need your passport, driver's license (and possibly an international drivers license depending on where you are coming from), a credit card, and insurance (if you are not planning on buying it from the rental company).

You can also check autoeurope.com. They are brokers for many different car rental companies and are very reliable.

Driving in Austria is a real pleasure. Be sure to visit the lake district, especially Hallstadt, and Salzburg.

Areas we covered on a 12 day trip to Austria were - Vienna, Wolfgang and surrounding villages (including Hallstatt and Gossau), Zell Am See/Hinterglemm (including grossglockner), Salzburg and Lake Konigsee (in Germany but close to Salzburg). I would not change a think about our itinerary. We rented a car in Vienna and returned it at Salzburg. Car is the way to go...it is an absolutely stunning country...you will not be disappointed.

When driving in Austria, be certain to confirm whether the rental vehicle has an annual vignette sticker. If not, you will have to purchase either a 10-day or 2-month sticker in order to legally drive on the autobahns.

As for where else to go in Austria?

Just a few off the top of my head:

The Salzkammergut (lakes) area.
The Berchtesgaden, Germany area (30 min. from Salzburg)
Zell am See and the Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse.
The Dachstein area (we loved our stay in Ramsau am Dachstein)
The Zillertal
Innsbruck/Hall in Tirol area

Just returned from Vienna and the area around Salzburg a couple of weeks ago. You won't want a car while you are in Vienna. Parking is hard to find and expensive. Plus, the public transportation is easy to use. Most of what you will want to see will be located inside the "Ring" that goes around the old part of Vienna and you can easily walk most of it or take the Ubahn or tram.

We rented our car from Sixt. This was the first time we rented from Sixt and did so because we wanted to pick the car up at the Westbahnhof train station for an easier departure to the Salzburg area. We were very pleased with the rate, the car and the service.

There are so many beautiful places to see in Austria that it would be hard to go wrong on any of them. We spent a total of 6 nights in Vienna -- 3 upon arrival from the US and 3 after our driving trip before returning home. In between, we spent 10 nights in St. Gilgen on Wolfgangsee. It is one of our favorite places in this area. We did easy day trips to Salzburg, Hallstatt, St. Wolfgang and Gmunden. You could easily add Bad Ischl to that list.

No matter what you choose, I'm sure you will enjoy your Austrian adventure.
