Amapola, You took the words out of my mouth.

Whatever the problem with travelers' checks and a rental car in Puerto Rico, it can't have involved the exchange rate--unless Shrink was trying to use travelers' checks in some other currency than US.

That being said, this is a very useful thread, one that has helpled me decide to use my credit card rather than my debit card as much as possible during my visit.

I have a related question (regarding when/where to get Euros) which I will post in a separate thread.

1. If it were me, I wouldn't rely on just cards... I have had my ATM card rejected by some banks in Italy, and most hotels will take the traveler's checks, if you are in a pinch. Some of each, some of each...
2. I rode Ventimiglia-Cinque Terre 2 years ago.. no A/C, but windows do open for a good breeze.
7. Pickpockets- I did see people watching my backpack sometimes, but I had locks on it, so no worries.
