What a great trip report. I know where I’m getting my information from when I finally plan a trip to Amsterdam. So fun for you to go with your daughter. I think I would want to do exactly what you did.. but maybe with some spicy food.

jerseysusan Aug 28th, 2018 07:46 PM

Barbn - thank you, if you plan a trip I’ll be happy to help you in any way. I usually travel with one of my kids as my husband won’t fly. I love going with them. Now if my son went instead of my daughter I would have ate spicy food.

Don't you just love the way European cafés put blankets on the outdoor chairs when it's chilly? I think that is such a nice touch.

Really nice report, jerseysusan.

Thanks StCirq. We got a kick out of the blankets, they were very much appreciated.

Thanks, Jerseysusan. Sounds like a fun girls' trip. I've copied some of your food suggestions for Amsterdam for an upcoming visit.

I had a question regarding CCs that you might be able to answer, at least if the jersey relates to New Jersey. Did you find that US issued cards were easy to use? Did you need a chip and pin or were the more common chip and signature cards accepted? (We have one chip and pin, but the "rewards" are not my favorite, so we've only used it sparingly in the past when we absolutely needed it.) Thanks in advance!

StCirq Sep 1st, 2018 01:09 PM

You don't need a chip and pin card anywhere in Europe, except in some cases for toll roads or automatic ticket machines. Since time immemorial, US credit cards, and those of most other nations, have been accepted in Europe, except for the oddities like Diner's Club. Greater concerns about CCs are a) whether you are being charged transaction costs, which you shouldn't be if you can avoid it, and b) making sure you aren't a victim of dynamic currency conversion.

As StCirq said I had no problem using my cc. I happen to have one with a chip, which is not required. I was never asked for a pin.

Thank you for taking time to write such a great report. It is enjoyable reading and has lots of good info as well.

jerseysusan, I agree with you totally that the best thing to do in Amstwrdam is to walk and enjoy the beautiful canals. We prefer to stay in Central Canal district for this very reason. Charming!

Thank you for the information. This is very helpful. When you visited the museums, were those all in one day or how many days did you spend on museums?

jerseysusan Sep 4th, 2018 04:05 AM

We went to one museum per day, in the morning. This worked out well for us as my daughter does not love museums as much as I do. Going in the mornings helped to beat the crowds.
