A Week-Long Romantic Adventure in Iceland
 

Hello!

My girlfriend and I are planning on going to Iceland in the next year, and I wanted to ask who out there in the Fodor's world knows of some of the best nature spots to hit, where we could best view the Borealas, Hotel suggestions as well as the best time of year to make our journey there.

Yes, I am being a bit general right now but I am just beginning my research and any help would be more than appreciated!

If you want to see the Northern Lights (or at least try to!) you'll have to be in Iceland between early September and April to be in with a chance, but even then there's no guarantee as cloud cover and weather conditions will have an effect on whether you'll be lucky enough to see them.

You don't necessarily need to stay out in the sticks (unless of course you want to) to view the lights as trips leave daily from Reykjavik.

My hotel recommendation would be hotel 101 (http://www.101hotel.is/) which is one of my favourite hotels anywhere, let alone in Iceland. There are obviously cheaper options around (hotel Thingholt http://www.centerhotels.com/our-hotels/hotel-thingholt is anther decent option) but if you have an idea of the amount you want to spend and where in Iceland you want to stay, I'm sure people can give some other suggestions.

As for the best nature spots, everywhere (practically) in Iceland is a nature spot and outside of the biggies (the golden circle sites, Skaftafell and Thingvellir) it usually comes down to whatever floats your boat.

Something else that is fun (if you like that sort of thing, I know I do) is the Airwaves music Festival, which is usually on in late October, or alternatively it could be good time to avoid, as the number of visitors rises hugely.

As far as I'm concerned, any time is a good time to visit Iceland...

For Aurora Borealis sights you should try to be outside the city and near Thingvellir for example (National Park). You can find a hotel or maybe a cottage (for more romance) at www.hotels.is

I would recommend that you check out the forcast at http://www.vedur.is/vedur/spar/nordurljos/ to see if there will be northern lights. Also you might want to take a cheap lesson in photographing northern light at the Aurora Center in Reykjavik, http://www.aurorareykjavik.is/
