A week in the Azores over Christmas from the UK
I am American, my husband is British; we live outside of London. We are in our 50s.
My husband recently read something about the Azores in The Guardian and now he's talking about us going out there during the week of Christmas.
He doesn't like queues or crowds and I think the idea of a relaxing week in a unique place appeals to him. I'm a bit concerned that he'll get bored, however. While we like the beauty of nature, we are not into hiking or anything like that.
1) Based on the above - and considering that we'd want a location with the best weather (I understand that it can be quite different from island to island) - which island(s) would be best to research with regard on where to base ourselves?
2. Since we're not into hiking, what other activities would be available during the Xmas hols? Whilst we'd be there mainly to relax, we'd obviously want to soak up the culture.
Thank you!

So, no ques or crowds and 50+ gee you sound like us ; )!!!!
The weather is in general warm compared to the rest of Europe, average Temp in winter probably around 55ish degrees. It sounds like you are going to want mostly to car tour and have things close by. I would recommend Flying into Terceira and staying at Praia da Vitoria OR, Staying in Horta Faial for the following reasons.
1.) The world is only just becoming aware of these exotic and beautiful islands and, so, much is just closed during the winter. If you chose Terceira or Faial, you have the opportunity to do car touring. Sit on a beach during beautiful days, shop til you drop if you like, visit museums, craters etc. The islands are lovely with so so much to see. Many tours are not offered during the winter especially the water sport types of tours. I would suggest Pria da Vitoria if going to Terceira and Horta if going to Faial. Wishing you safe and happy travels.

Since you're a tea lover, you could visit the tea and pineapple plantations on Sao Miguel. I would check out weather history for that time of year. The temp may not be too bad but it could be very rainy.
I think it would be better to visit in June or July. The flowers are GLORIOUS, and you'd miss seeing them in Dec.

Are you flying direct or from Porto?
The weather changes at least 4 times every day so the Island is not that important from a weather point of view.
The people are very honest and friendly. Go where there are most people, maybe hire a bike, try the local wine, eat the stew boiled in holes in the ground.
Hiking is the best, but if you don't like it try bike riding, whale watching may not be the right season.
