A week in Istanbul

My girlfriend and I will be in Istanbul for about 7 days in mid-May. Any suggestions beyond the obvious major sites? Also, should we try to get out of Istanbul for a day or so, and where should we go?
There is a Turkey thread on this site that may help. Read back a few months. Also most guidebooks have sample intineraries.

The Yerebatan Cistern is unique and fascinating. Try wandering the Spice Bazaar. When Istanbul gets to be TOO MUCH (and, while it is a gorgeous and fascinating place, it can) take the ferry to Princes' Island, where no cars are allowed.
Have fun!

1. Istanbul is jam packed with stuff to do. I spend my mornings touring one of the sites: Topkapi Palace, Hagia Sofia/Blue Mosque, St. Chora/Eyup Mosque and the afternoon in the Grand Bazaar and Arasta Bazaar.
2. Go to Gallerie 44-- near the Arasta Bazaar-- call Murat 05357369501. He will provide advice and act as host. He'll also fend off the salespeople and make sure you are not cheated.
3. Stay in the Sultanahmet area and avoid having to pay taxi fares and spend a lot of time waiting in traffic.
4. The military museum is one of the best as is the archeological museum.
5. You can get a tour and one overnight to Ephesus--wonderful. Book at travel agents or hotel.

We spent about a week in Turkey last year and loved Istanbul. We wanted to spend some time outside the city but did not have lots of time or a car so we took the ferry (I think it was called the autobus) to Yalova, then walked across the street to catch a small minibus to Termal. It is an old style spa resort in the hills. Very reasonable, good rooms with free use of the VERY hot private mineral bathtubs. Be sure to visit the unisex Turkish sauna with hot pool and lots of steam. Great mix of people there- a great experience.
