Just back from 8 days in Malta... and thought I'd weigh in.

I just didn't encounter the rudeness. Everyone we ran into was friendly, polite and helpful (except for one really rude German tourist). We had great service in restaurants, found helpful people in all of the museums and historic sites, didn't have any issues with shopkeepers or taxi drivers and encountered a number of very nice people along our travels.

I also found the driving relatively easy (especially compared to places like Istanbul or even New York).

We didn't encounter places where people regularly dumped trash wherever they felt and a few odd issues like that.

Hi,

Well I am sorry for your experience in Malta. I have to say bus drivers CAN BE a little bit rude, however the bus company is taking serious action for any rude drivers.

Also, be careful, as sometimes Maltese (especially the old uneducated lot) could be so over-friendly, that they might seem rude, noisy and nosy. However, generally, the Maltese are quite very friendly and very willing to help.

Bookmarking. I want to take a recuperative holiday in late autumn and this might be the place.
Some of those 1st time posters were hilariously awful - they certainly did nothing to lessen the perception of Maltese belligerence.

Tedgale, I hope you also read the Times of Malta article in response, and the 108 comments there. One can't help but admire the willingness to express opinion.

I spent a week in Malta year before last and did not find any rude people. They were totally typical in terms of interactions compared with everywhere else I've been. (I've been to about 25 European countries). Anyplace that gets lots of tourists will have some shopkeepers, etc. taking a little less time chatting you up cause they are busy and tired. But rude - I didn't experience anything I'd call 'rude'.

Here's my trip report - http://www.fodors.com/community/euro...ta-in-july.cfm

I'm married to a Maltese man
And he's completely insane
Along with his crazy family
Although I'm completely
In love with him, I can't seem to understand why this whole family acts so bizzare like they do. My dad's brother was also married to a Maltes lady. He said she was beyond insane and ruined most of his life until she passed away. Not sure what's wrong with this country and their culture
But I've heard nothing but horror stories about Maltese people in general. I'm sure the country is gorgeous, but it seems something is wrong with the people themselves. Yes particularly the women.

I stay on Malta once or twice a year, since 1996 or so. I have never experienced anything bad. In my eyes people on MAlta are one of the friendliest I know.
