A visit to Eltham Palace and Gardens
 

I spent a couple of hours today at Eltham Palace and Gardens, an English Heritage site, only an hour’s walk from my house in Blackheath, and 40 minutes by train from Charring Cross station.

Art Deco lovers will love it. In these COVID times, you need to book ahead. Delightful docents eager to share their knowledge.

I loved Eltham Palace -- I visited in early Dec so the gardens weren't much. Hopefully can return sometime in the not toooooo distant future.

Wonderful for an Art Deco lover and the gardens were very pretty, but must be spectacular in Spring and Summer.

I have to admit that the walk from here to there was not the best, as I was walking along one of London's major highways.

When are you planning your next trip? Things continue to get stranger and stranger here :)

(very) Tentatively next July but who the heck knows . . . .

I had a lot shorter walk than you (which is a good thing because that was when I had an injured knee and had to use a cane). I only had the short/level walk from Mottingham Station. Believe it or not I made it all the way from Pimlico to Greenwich (Painted Hall) to Mottingham and back in to town entirely stair/escalator free - on a Sunday no less (!) with a combo of buses, Jubilee line, DLR and trains. That took some planning ;)

Don't you just love that wonderful round entrance hall/main room/ceiling? And some of the marquetry around the house was unbelievable.

Sounds like something I would really enjoy, so I'm posting so I can find it again. Thanks!

O'Reilly, thank you for posting this. It makes a wonderful day trip to think about -- maybe when we make it back next spring!

For both you and Susan:

You can make a day in South East London, which most visitors never see.

Take a train in the morning from Charring Cross to Mottingham and then a 15 minutes walk to Eltham Palace. I suggest about 2 hours to see the Palace and gardens.

You can then take a bus to Blackheath Village and have lunch (loads of restaurants) and walk around the Georgian Neighbourhood (Cator Estates, where I live, but in the smallest house on the estate).

Then walk through Greenwich Park (fabulous gardens, including a wonderful Rose garden at the right time of year), see a wonderful view of London, visit the Observatory.

Walk down into Greenwich to visit the Maritime Museum, the Cutty Sark, the Queen's house, and the painted ceiling in the Old Royal Naval College. Finish the day by taking the Clipper back to London, which offers the finest views of London from the east to London Bridge.

Its a great day out.

Thanks for posting. The day trip you describe sounds really interesting. We've been to Greenwich a few times but never Eltham Palace. It's now on the list!
Who knows though when we will get there :(
