a vacation in the Costa Brava, Spain
Has anyone vacationed in the Costa Brava region of Spain? Would it be interesting to spend a winter month in an apartment there? Can you travel to other areas from there? Is the weather good in the winter? Do you know the name of any very nice apartment complex there? I appreciate all info. drfapa

Personally, I wouldn't spend a winter month on the Costa Brava. I'd end up in the car all the time traveling to more interesting places with more going on. I've been there a few times and just thought, meh...many nicer places to be....
But that might just be me. I'm not enamored much of the Costa Brava to begin with, with a few exceptions. |
I think you might want to consider renting in Girona, rather than on the coast. You could do day trips from there. Here are a few listings. I have no experience with any of these:

I spent a few days in Tarragona many years ago in midwinter, and thought "This would be nice in summer"...but it's probably overrun in summer these days. Would definitely stay further inland in winter.

Costa Brava is an excellent location for an extended vacation, with lots to see and to do. You might be interested in my trip report:
http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...p;tid=35086408 We stayed there in April, and it was still cool and rainy. In winter, temperatures are clearly above freezing, but it will not be really mild. Climatewise, I would recommend to spend the winter on Mallorca (Majorca) which is much milder because it is surrounded by the mediterranean sea and has not the cold winds from the Pyrenees. Since the island is a popular winter destination for Northern Europeans, you find plenty of accomodation and a fully developed infrastructure there. Also plenty of culture, architecture, sightseeing, hiking, biking etc. Another option would be Andalucia. The part which is east of Gibraltar will be milder than the Atlantic coast. |
We spent 4 days in the Costa Brava area last February and enjoyed it. Two nights were at Hotel El Far in Llfrance and two in Argeles sur Mer at the Auberge de Roua just outside Collioure France. You will need a car, of course, but we found a lot to do there--Figueres, Girona, Peratallada, Tossa de Mar. Weather was quite nice, say temps in the 50 to 60 degree centigrade range during the day.
