Thanks for posting your terrific trip report - it brought back many lovely memories of our time in Sardinia in February 2013. (which might have been even quieter than October!).

We enjoyed Saint Remy in Calgiari - twice! And also 2 of the restaurants you went to in Alghero.

My wife's sister, who lives in Naples, owns a beautiful condo in Golfo Aranci, right on the beautiful beach, in Sardinia. She paid a song for it in 1982, and it's worth a fortune now. We haven't been there for the past few years, but my wife and I went to Sardinia every year since 1987. We absolutely love it there. Golfo Aranci is a great little town, which is mainly a fishing village, so there are absolutely great seafood resataurants there. Golfo is on the east shore, close to Olbia, an ugly industrial city, which you do not want to visit. Golfo is also close to the Costa Smeralda, which is a nice place to visit if you want to see the gliteratti. I've run into Denzel Washington, Tom Hanks, Angelina Joli and many others there, even though they don't impress me. The first or second time we went to Golfo, there were ads to invest a minimum of $5000 to build up the Costa Smeralda. The Aga Khan was looking for those investors. Naturally, I didn't go for ot. That initial 5 grand is now worth over 30 million bucks!. The Aga Khan actually bought an airline to facilitate travel to the area. That's how Meridiana Airlines was born. Boy, did I blow that one!. When you say that the island shuts down in October, you are mistaken, at least in the area of Golfo Aranci and the immediate surroundings. The place is then invaded by Germans and Scandinavians, and we have a great time, since some of them also own condos in the same building as my sister in law. Being American we are a novelty to the teutonics, because there are no Americans in Golfo Aranci. We have made many friends there and on the beach in front of my sister in laws place, and I have a bunch of funny stories about our visits there.

I am surprised you didn't find much to visit in Orgosolo and Mamoiada. Mamoiada has a fascinating museum on the masks worn by the Mamuthones during one of the most famous festivals in Sardinia. There is also a good restaurant, "Sa Rosada". Orgosolo is known for its murals, political statements painted on the walls by local artists.
Bosa to Alghero is 45 km and though the road is indeed winding, it doesn't take 2 hours !

Once I accompanied my husband on a business trip to Olbia, and while he was holed up with his clients, I took a train to Golfo Aranci. I thought from the name that it meant "Gulf of the Orange Trees", but I learned that it meant "Gulf of the Crabs" in the local dialect. It's in a very attractive spot; I walked from the train station to a beautiful little cove, and then came back to the station through the town. It was the off season, but I could see from the shops that it was not as touristy as other places I've seen in Sardegna. I certainly wouldn't mind spending some time there at a warmer time of the year.

bvlenci-- You would love it! Especially during the feast of Ferragosto, which is the 15th of August. They have a ball, and everyone is invited and it's free.

Driving from Alghero to Bosa, we took our time and stopped every time there was a place to stop. However, you are right. The ride should take an hour, but I guess it felt like an hour after 30 minutes, and we were only half way! :-)

As for Orgosola, I had read about it and planned to visit, but after wandering around Nuoro searching for a place for lunch, it was getting late. I knew we had a long ride to Alghero, so we skipped Orgosolo.

Crunchy... you may be disappointed.

Me and my wife visited west sardinia through some friends who advised us to the area.
These are a lot of places hidden and difficult to find if you do not know where ...
