A reasonable Hotel in Zurich

Six of us will be Switzerland the end of Sept. We wish to stay over one night at Zurich airport to catch a flight the next morning. We have been quoted $ 285 t0 $200 per couple for the night. Is there anything available for around $100 ? How about the city of Zurich? Thank you.

Ken,
We stayed at the Fly Away Hotel in Zurich the night before we departed to the good ol' USA. I think it cost somewhere around $100 per night, breakfast included. You should be able to do a search on "Zurich Fly Away Hotel" and come up with the website.

One thing to consider. We had to be at the airport at 5:30 am. So we got up early and took a taxi. Cost us about $10-15 dollars (I think --- it was awful early and converting those francs is confusing!). If you want to take the train from the Fly Away to the airport, you must take the train back "downtown" to the "big" train station, change trains and head off to the airport passing the Fly Away Hotel. Not very convenient in my opinion. The taxi worked best for us.

However, the hotel was clean, very modern, reminded us of something we would find back home.

We stayed at the Hotel Leonhard Zurich just over the Bahnhof Bridge from the main train station. It was no more than a few hundred yards or a 3 minute walk from the station. We paid 175 SF for a double room with bath in October 1998, we did not reserve ahead of time. There is a room finding service in the train station that should be able to find you a room near the station within your price range if you do not book ahead of time.

Trains leave approximately every 20 minutes from the Bahnhof (train station) to the airport. At the time tickets were 5.40 SF each, we were told they are only good for 2 hours from the time of purchase so buy them before you board the train.

We were very happy that we stayed in Zurich. It was nice to be able to explore the city on our last night in Europe. Do a search on this board and you should find some more information.

I forgot to add that the train stops directly at the airport. There is a train station right at the airport which makes taking the train from the city a breeze!

Leonhard and Limmathof are pretty good buys. Nothing fancy, mind you. For details see www.twenj.com/swisshtl.htm
