Backpacks are one way to go; there are some that have wheels and handles to convert to a rolling bag. 21" or 22" rolling bags are also easy to move around (be sure they have a handle on the end and the side for carrying or lifting). In either case (so to speak), you'll have limited the amount of stuff you're hauling, and that is what really makes traveling easy.
