To take this to another tangent, I am still tring to understand why the airports do not require AT LEAST A LUGGAGE TAG to release your bags at the turnstile in the airport. anyone can remove them at will, and with so many alike, it is odd that nobody really cares about the american citizen as he travels. I would be gloriously happy if the government showed the same concern expenditure and energy for its citizens as it does for illegal immigrants. There are a lot of ways to make air travel more accommodating to the traveller. If we are going to pass a lot of regulations, why not look at the comfort of the person who is paying the bills and the taxes?

Barbara: I'm not suggesting that people be denied to vote (although I do have some perhaps pompous views, some serious some not, about whether all people deserve to vote...), I just think showing id would eliminate many of the cross allegations about voter fraud, etc.
JamesA: I don't disagree, but keep in mind that most restrictive laws are not imposed to address the actions of the innocent. We all suffer (or see our liberties restricted) by the abuses of a relative few.

One kind poster gave the web address of the New York Times article. If you read it (but why would you want to read anything which clarifies the POTENTIAL regulations), you will find this paragraph:
"As of Jan. 1, 2008, land travel, which includes that by hundreds of thousands of migrant workers, will be added, meaning all travel into the United States by citizens or by Canadians or Mexicans will require a passport or CERTAIN OTHER ACCEPTED FORMS OF IDENTIFICATION. For Mexican citizens, the exception will still include a special border crossing card, which includes a fingerprint, a form of identification issued by the United States government in an attempt to prevent fraud."
If you are paying any attention to world matters, you will find, for example, that even the usually liberal Dutch are questioning the desirability of open borders.

I was just reading in the NYX, that they've decided to "rethink" this issue, since there are so many day border crossings ..something like 1,000,000 in Texas alone. I know the canadian border towns were all upset, since so many of them cross over to buy gas and other things and the US side shopkeepers weren't too happy either.
