A Nice Parisian Hotel
 

Hello to all you fellow travellers,

We hope to travel from London to Paris for a long weekend from 31 Dec to Jan 2 (2007) for my mother's 70th birthday and would like someone to recommend a nice place to stay. Preferably somewhere a little different (my mother loves anything to do with Art Deco or Art Nouveau), and somewhere not ridiculously expensive (am I being realistic by suggesting no more than £150/night).Having not travelled to Paris at this time of year, will anything be open - restaurants, art galleries and so on?

That is a great question, and one I don't have an answer to. However, I do hate it when posters such as Capote only register to promote/advertise a website and of Capotes 18 posts at the moment I looked, 17 were giving links to that website. This is clearly against Fodors etiquette and rules and I hope you get some great answers from the true Fodorites who will have the information you are looking for if they see this thread. It might be a bit more attention getting if you post a new thread - such as: Looking for Art Nouveau or Art Deco Hotel in Paris.

By the way did you try Googling Art Deco/Art Nouveau hotels in Paris? You might get a bite

Tim 2...just in Paris last month and found that the Hotel Duo (formerly Axial Beaubourg) could meet your requwats...I believe at 170 E's may be more than you wat to spend. We liked it a lot..in the Marais, elevator and A/C..
near Hotel de Ville complex, two blocks from Pompidou. Very miimalist design interior...we thought it to be quite refeshing for a hotel in Paris.

Thanks for the useful info. Much appreciated. Now that I've scoured the net, it seems that a smaller, cosier hotel might be a better option in a nice part of town. The Art Deco/Nouveau seem a little imposing and impersonal, however beautiful. As it's my mum's birthday, quite happy to take the dive and splash out on something really nice.Have looked at a few hotels and came across www.espritsaintgermain.com. Anyone know it? Also, have no idea if anywhere will be open between 31 Dec and Jan 3. Anyone know? Also considering Amsterdam, so would welcome any suggestions here too.

I'm no expert on Paris, but have been there. I think searching for hotels in the entire city is a daunting task. While if you narrow it down, first choosing a couple of the arrondisements that you would like to be located in, then look only there, will make this MUCH easier.

Do you have a map of Paris? The 4th thru the 7th are central areas that people often choose. You can tell the number of the arrondisement by the last part of the postal code in a hotel address.
