Gordes is on a hill so check the location of the rental as you might find yourself walking up and down a lot during your stay to get to the center of the village. Provence is quite large and I think you could do 1-2 weeks worth of day trips from that location but the Nice and the Cote is about 3 hours away which is too far for me as a day trip. As others have said, pick at least two locations for a month. You will pretty much also need a car for a month if you base yourself in Gordes.

We've spent 4 weeks in Gordes (actually Cabrieres d'Avignon) and another 2 weeks in nearby Goult - and we never ran out of things to do. We enjoyed many days just doing nothing except going to the local farmers market to get stuff for dinner.

well, Gordes and Cabrieres d'Avignon are not the same place at all, they're about 10 km apart. Gordes is very expensive and chock-a-block with tourists and wealthy people, that's what I don't like about it. BUt it is an attractive town.
But if the OP found a house to rent, I bet it was not actually in Gordes but nearby. It is funny how particular places become magnets for the wealthy, like Gordes and St Remy. And tons of expat Brits. I don't know how they get so much money that they are buying up France. I think Johnny Depp and Hugh Grant hang out more in St Remy/Les Baux, so does Scott Ridley. John Malkovich is in Bonnieux.
But as a general geographic location, it is very central and pretty much perfect for day trips for all over, south, Vaucluse, Drome, west, etc. So it's a good choice. Gordes itself is a bit difficult to navigate, as it is closed to cars unless you live in it.

the gite where we stayed was in the "domaine" of Cabrieres d'Avignon and about half way between Gordes & the "village" of Cabrieres d'Avignon. We've walked to both Gordes & Cabrieres. Our "recycling" location was in the back of the huge parking lot for Gordes.

I reference Gordes because there is another Cabrieres close by in the Gard Dept between Nimes and the Pont du Gard. I once mis-advised someone who wanted info (grocery stores, bakeries, etc) about Cabrieres and I gave them info about Cabrieres d'Avignon.
