A mere 2.5 days in Iceland in Aug with 13 and 14 yr old boys. Help!

Hi All:

We're taking advantage of the IcelandAir layover in August at the tail-end of a 3-week trip to visit the family in Europe.

When we travel, we love to put down roots and are not big-tour types. But I know this short of a trip is going to be a challenge to do our normal type of travel and would love to get advice and suggestions.

1) I've been on the IheartRejkavik blog and plan to book her on Day 1!
2) Has anyone stayed at the Loft Hostel by chance? Looking at a quad room possibly.
3) Wondering if we should stay the last 2 nights somewhere in a small town on a peninsula or on the ring road?
4) we love great good and wine (which often means cities), but also hiking, fishing, horseback riding, exploring, which takes me back to question #3.
5) Definitely do not want to fight the tourists at the Blue Lagoon but will want some sort of Geothermal pool experience.

I know we will come back sometime, but don't want to short-change our kids, particularly, with our distaste of fast-paced travel.

We appreciate any and all advice!

Not stayed at the Loft Hostel but have been there and it is very nice and perfectly located in the centre of Reykjavik.

If you only have 2.5 days in Iceland I would just stay in Reykjavik and do any trips from there.

Ice caving? Snow mobiling? All possible in a day from RVK

Laugardalslaug is the biggest (maybe not the best but still good) pool in Reykjavik. Costs about 500 ISK ($5 roughly???) to get in.

Spas all over, just about every town and most villages will have open air heated pool and hot pots (37-40C). Plenty within the R area, use google maps to track down your local one which are far cheaper than the Lagoon

Blue Lagoon is one of the few that allows the calcium paste to come up as well.

Most of the horse places will pick you up from R (wherever you are staying) to go for a half day or whole day riding. If they have a hotel nearby they will often offer to take you back next day as part of the deal. Have a search and send them an email.

Wine, you will pay through the nose, local beer is more sensible and environmentally more logical.

Thanks for both suggestions! bilboburgler - we love good beer, so that choice was easy!

For 2.5 days would suggest staying in Reykjavik itself and make trips from there.

If you plan on visiting the Golden Circle on one of those days, you could find the geothermal pools at Laugarvatn in that circle.

agree with mxm. no need to stay elsewhere.
the blue lagoon is a great experience, perhaps reconsider. if you don't want to deal with tourists, you are able to book a private "room" with access to a suite common area, and private bathroom and showers. the beers are great, as bilboburgler mentioned. enjoy!

Hi!
5) Laugarvatn or Landmannalaugar. The former is as good by quality as Blue Lagoon, but much less populated and pompous. The latter, well, bathing in hot springs can be just the beginning of a long and adventurous day among lava fields and volcanos.
