A long weekend in Corfu
Hi,
We're planning on going for a long weekend (Thursday to Sunday) in September with two other couples. I'm looking at Corfu. We're mature couples (64-74). Is there enough to do in Corfu Town and the surrounding area? Is there decent public transportation to get to places out of Corfu Town? Are taxis expensive? Is Corfu Town flat or hilly? Thanks, Nina |
There is more than enough to do for 3 days oinly.
There is a public bus network and there are taxis (about 1-2 EUR/km) for trips to isolated places. There are local ferries to the small Islands of Erikoussa, Othoni, Mathraki (alll a few miles North of Corfu) and Paxi (a few miles South of Corfu) and to the beach resort of Saranda (Albania, close to the Unesco Word Heritage excavations of Butrint). Day trips to the ancient Greek theatre of Dodoni, the stalagmites caves and the famous lake (all around Ioannina) or a boat trip to the uninhabited beach Island of Antipaxi might be fine too, bu you will not have time for all that |
Your stay will only be two full days, so you won't have any time to do excursions to other places on the island. Corfu town itself has lots of shops and restaurants to occupy you. See Liston Square and promenade, the Achillean Palace, Spianada Square, wander round the Old Town, the Citadel, church of St Spyridon, Mon Repos-where the Duke of Edinburgh was born-if you have time, Casa Parlante in the Old Town. In addition there are lots of old churches, some really beautiful.
There's lots to do in the town itself without visiting islands and with your short amount of time, you won't really have the chance. |
