I just read that Penelope Keith (another British actress best known to Americans for her roles in several Britcoms that have been shown here on public TV, including To the Manor Born and The Good Neighbors) will be playing Madame Arcati in a revival of Noel Coward's Blithe Spirit at the Savoy Theatre in London. Performances begin on November 16 (with an opening night of November 22), and are scheduled to run through May 28, 2005.
The Solid Gold Cadillac doesn't close until January 15, so anyone who's fortunate enough to be in London betwen November 16 and January 15 will have the opportunity to see both Patricia Routledge and Penelope Keith onstage.
I saw The Solid Gold Cadillac last month, and enjoyed it very much. I have to admit, I bought my ticket solely on the strength of Patricia Routledge's presence in the cast, but I was pleasantly surprised at how good the play itself, and the rest of the cast (almost all of them, anyway) were. I thought they made the right decision in not updating the play from the 1950's, when it was written, but some of the old dollar amounts produced unintentional laughs, as when Patricia Routledge's character expresses horror at the idea that the CEO of a corporation in which she owns stock is being paid the princely salary of $150,000!
