A hotel in Santander--any suggestions?

Will be attending a wedding in Santillana, in April, and have a stopover in Santander.

Our last lengthy stay we stayed at Hostal Paris, just behind the Grand Hotel Sardinero; but it's seasonal. I'm not sure it will be open in April. I know they close at the end of September. But I don't know when they open. There are several Hotels along the beachfront in el Sardinero. That's the area I would recommend.

I usually stay at Pensiónes or Hostals when travelling 'solo.' I've also stayed at Hostal Picos de Europa in Potes, Capital of Liebana: nice area, great food!

Why not one of the Paradors in Santillana del mar? There are two, right across the square from each other; and April is not a busy time for Tourism.

In Santander I'd go for the Hotel Real (http://www.barcelonaturisme.com/). It's an excellent 5-star property with a lot of charm and a terrific location. You'll also love the price.

Do you need to stay in Santander rather than Santillana for some reason?

If the wedding is in the Colegiata in Santillana, I would suggest just spending the night in Santillana at either Parador. I've stayed in both.
The public rooms at the former annex, now called the the Santillana Parador are not impressive like the ones at the 17th century manor home Parador Gil Blas, but guest rooms are very nice in both.

If you plan to stopover for a night after the wedding in Santander, we've stayed very near the beautiful El Sardinero beach at the moderately priced Santemar and the Silken Río (former Rhin). The Gran Victoria at Sardinero also gets good reviews, but I haven't stayed there.

The Real is more deluxe than the 2 above, a member of Leading Hotels of the World, and Santander's Grande Dame, a white wedding cake structure built in 1917 to house King Alfonso XIII's court, when Santander was the summer royal residence. It has a thalassotherapy spa. But it's a longish walk from the beach. I like going up there for afternoon tea or a drink on the terrace.

Although I love Santander, I agree with Maribel, in your situation I would think it's more convenient to stay at one of the Paradores in Santillana.

In Santander I have stayed at Hotel Hoyuela and Hotel Bahía, both part of the Grupo sardinero

www.gruposardinero.com

I much prefered the spacious rooms at the Bahia which faces the bay, . The Hoyuela has a great location in Sardinero, but I prefered the atmosphere downtown (where the Bahia is) for restaurants, etc.

Hi,

Thanks to everyone for the great responses. The wedding is in Santillana, at a parador (we're at the Gil Blas), and the night following is in Santander, hence we needed a room there. No paradors in Santander. But we're in the Bahia, with some of the wedding party. the bride and groom are at the Real, and we didn't really want to run into them!

I think you'll enjoy the Bahia.

Have a great time!
