A good base on Corfu

Planning to be on Corfu in September. We would like to rent a house or apartment. We will have a car. We like quiet and beaches but want to be close enough to the town so that it's interesting. Interested in Beautiful sandy beaches, architecture, history, hiking, good food. We're wondering if there is a village that's not too touristy near the town. Any thoughts or suggestions are welcome.

Anyone have suggestions for a base in Corfu?

When you say "the town" do you mean Corfu town itself? If so, it's a very busy place and if you want to stay within striking distance, most of the neighbouring places are busy too. Not perhaps quite as much, but still busy.

Bear in mind of course that this is a small island. We've stayed at Gouvia in the past, just north of Kerkira and enjoyed it. There's a good choice of places to stay and if you choose one just on the outskirts, it should fit your needs.

Thank you Rubicund. Yes I did mean Corfu town. Any recommendations among those villages within stiking distance?

As I mentioned, Gouvia would be my first choice.

We have book our holiday home in Corfu for many years on this site. They offer a small but hand-picked selection of beautiful houses, all of which are located near the beach in the beautiful nature of Corfu, far away from mass tourism: http://www.korfu-ferienhaus-ferienwohnung.de/willkommen
