A Fun Day in Rome

We will be in Rome for a day in late January (off a cruise ship). We've been to Rome three times before and have done all the touristy things.

What are your suggestions for fun and unique things to do in one day in Rome? Lunch suggestions are welcome too!

What did you like best about Rome on your previous trips? I love to just walk around the city without a plan, stopping for cappucino or something to eat if I come across a neat little place. You could do a gelato tour - map out some recommended shops and conduct your own taste test! I recommend Frigidarium. :)

How much time will you have? I would start my day with a coffee near the Pantheon or Piazza Navona then maybe head over to Trastevere for lunch after wandering through the market at Campo de Fiore.

Yes, I second Frigidarium! It's the best gelato and the owner, Fabrizio is a gem!
Here's a picture of him and his shop on my website (go to bottom of page)

After that, I would just wander the streets of the historical center as sherhatfield suggested. You might consider lunch at Armando al Pantheon if they are open on the day you will be there (you can make reservations on line, and should, they are small). You can see one of the two meals we ate there on the link above.

Choose l museum , preferably a smaller one with no need to book entrance time, see the weird museums article on www.elegantetruria.com , then have a nice lunch and coffee at Tazza d'Oro or in Piazza Navona. January doesnt seem to be a good time for cruising...you are very brave .

If the weather is nice and you have never been to the top of the Janiculum you could head up there for the great view out over the city.

If you are a cat lover go to the cat sanctuary in Largo Argentina. There is a walk late in the afternoon explaining the area and ruins which the cats live among.
The Pallaro family restaurant with a fixed menu is also in that area.
I had been to Rome and this was my 2nd trip before I did this, but it was definitely one of my favorite, unique, things.

Have you been to the Borghese Museum and walk through the park? You could take a picnic lunch there and enjoy this stunning park.

Ignore the two advertisers (vetralla and Rankoussi)on this thread that are just promoting their own websites against Fodor's policy.

Have you been to the Napoleon museum? It traces the family down to the present. I had a wonderful time there and practically there alone. Plus they have great bathrooms!
