A few photos of London...

My husband and I (who live in North London) spent his birthday being tourists in London recently, at the end of May 2002.

If you'd like to see a few photos (mostly of Buckingham Palace) please visit

http://www.ofoto.com/I.jsp?m=65648666403&n=582711869

Kind Regards
Kavey

So, what was it like playing tourist in your own home town?

kavey Jun 25th, 2002 12:20 PM

Really strange actually, and a pleasure.

When I was a kid (growing up in Luton) we used to have lots of relatives visiting us from the US and India. My dad would bring them into London in the car but because there was little parking available he'd pause the car somewhere, and my and my sister would have to get out and take them around before returning to the car. We actually got really fed up of it.

Returning to Buckingham Palace after about 15 years or more was strange, not least because the crowds were so huge. We asked if they were heavier because of the jubilee the following week, but the friendly policewoman said that they were actually significantly less than usual.

I was very much focusing on people pictures, that's just my personal preference, and I haven't got a "thing" for the mounted police!

Hope you enjoy the photos.

I would like to add that I had forgotten how stunning the building in which the Natural History Museum resides is. It's a masterpiece, and worth visting just for the architecture let alone the contents...

Nice photos Kavey and fun too. I especially liked the closeup of Eddie and some of the police and kids shots.

These are great, Kavey, thanks! I especially liked the man with the bird on his head! They really bring London back to me.

Morning Giggle - it's a SQUIRREL!

:D:D:D:D

He kept calling out, "Suuuuzy, come on Suuuzy" and we realised after a few minutes that he seemed to be calling it to a couple of different ones. One of them was pregnant or recently pupped (or whatever it's called when squirrels give birth) and definitely female and looked very distinctive from the other one.

In the end I asked him which was one was Suzy.

He said, "Oh they are all Suzy, male, female and anywhere in between. All Suzy to me!"

:D

He was a pleasure to talk with.

Kavey

Kavey, thanks so much for sharing those beautiful pictures.

Looking very much forward to my London trip this fall. Finally..... can't wait! ;)

kavey Jun 27th, 2002 01:11 AM

It's a Minolta 505si SLR camera (cheaper end of the SLR range) and a 28-135mm lens, Sigma not Minolta.

The camera overall cost about £300 UK so it's similar in price to what many people spend for a digital or a good point and shoot.

I have an older Minolta SLR which I've used since school but found I was being put off by the weight so finally went and got this lighter model last year.

According the the ofoto log for this album so far there have been over 30 visitors (doesn't count me) since I posted the URL here. Thanks for visiting.

:D

Good photos - looks like you picked one of the better days in May to be a tourist!

I'm planning on doing something similar when a friend comes over from the US to visit in August. I'm actually looking forward to it - I usually try to avoid going in to London other than on my way to work and I never go near the tourist areas, so it should be quite fun.

Kavey, you mentioned the beauty of the Natural History Museum. Just a uselss fact I picked up somewhere, but you may have thought the building feels like a cathedral inside. This is intentional. It was built during the time that Darwin's theory of Evolution was being touted around town, and the guy who was in charge of the Museum project (whose name completely escapes me) was very anti-Darwin, and belonged in the camp who still believed in the Bible's version of events.

For this reason, he had the Museum designed as a Cathedral of worship to the glory of God's creations.

I always found that interesting.

kavey Jun 27th, 2002 04:48 AM

That IS interesting. Certainly its a space which inspires awe. And the level of detail in the stonework is phenomenal.

Keith, yes it was a lovely day, very hot and sunny... not too crowded... very nice.

Kavey

Kate Jun 27th, 2002 05:13 AM

Ben Haines Jun 27th, 2002 09:06 AM

Sorry: I don† follow. All I reached were tiny reproductiions, which wouldn't enlarge. Where did I go wrong ?

Ben Haines, London

kavey Jul 5th, 2002 01:06 PM

Ben, they shouldn't be tiny unless you have your screen resolution set incredibly high.
I have sized all photos for normal viewing and am not posting onto the website versions of high enough resolution for printing, though should anyone ever want any of my photos in high resolution, they are welcome to email.
Perhaps if you can let me know what resolution you are operating on I can check the size of the photos and repost if necessary.

Sorry for delay, I have been in Wales for a week and am currently in Bristol.
