A dumb question about packing hairspray

I'm somewhat embarrassed to ask this, but I have very specific products I use on my hair that I can't get in Germany. Are there restrictions on how bringing cans of foam mousse and hair spray on board? It seems to me the last time I travelled someone said there is a size restriction. Would there be a difference if I packed them in my suitcase vs. my carry-on? Ladies, I know you can relate - I want to look my best visiting relatives I only see every five years.

I would not pack any aerosole or liquid type products in a checked bag. First due air pressure or lack of it the aerosole can may erupt. Secondly for the same reason even non aerosole products of friends have not survived leaking badly. You should put all of these in carryon. If you need to take a lot, consider 2 of the travel size and put them in two different carry ons.

Hi Maggi
We always bring all kinds of shampoos and hair products. I pack them in Zip lock bags to protect our clothing, and pack them in the luggage being checked.
Never had a problem doing this.

regulations are changing all the time these days so I'd ask the airline about restrictions, but I too have traveled with mousse and such, and I just put them in ziplock bags as well.
Some hairsprays come in alternative
pump (non-aersol) forms, by the way.

Something else to consider...depending on the shape, size, and material of your hair care product container, security may want to check the contents of your bag ("What is that metal cylinder?"). This is by no means a bag thing--the more security the better. Just don't be surprised. I was once very surprised to be stopped after x-ray for a hand search of my carryon. I'd forgotten about the cylindrical espresso pot I purchased in Rome.

Helene Curtis makes a non-aerosol 'pump' foam mousse that works pretty well. As for hairspray, if worst comes to worst (i.e. they confiscate the can) you can probably buy it overseas. Yes, I can relate; my travel clothes are very practical, even dull, so I bring my hair junk as 'luxury' items.

My husband travels to the US every 3 months, and brings me back several aerosol cans of hairspray, spray starch and Static Guard. (If I don't use them they are hostess gifts to the other expats).

He puts them in Ziplocks and into checked luggage.

We have never had a leak, never a question from security or customs.

There is no chance of an aerosol can "erupting" on a commercial airline flight. The air pressure in the cabin -and in the baggage compartment as well - is regulated to the equivalent of about 6 or 7 thousand feet, which is obviously below the altitude that many pressurized containers are used at every day. Leaks are quite possible, but not explosions.

Some airlines (eg American) prohibit spray cans in the checked luggage. They say it can be dangerous. You can probably get away with it, but who are you fooling? Best check with your airline.
