A day outside Amsterdam
 

I was considering. a trip to Berlin in mid July ( thx for your input), but the thought of changing flights
turned me to another( direct flight) destination.
I have visited Amsterdam many times over the years, the last was a short stay about 7/8 years ago.
During my previous visits to the city I made day trips to Haarlem, Hague, Brussels, Bruges ..
I would like to get out of town one ( of six) days but not with an organized tour. An hour on the bus or train is ok with me.
Would Delft or Rotterdam be an interesting destination ? Or ?

It has been several years but I did enjoy very much a day trip to Utrecht. Just another possiblility for consideration.

don't forget ferries and bicycles, trains are not the only alternative form of transport

What are you hoping to do on your day out of the city? Visit another city or see some countryside or smaller towns?
Smaller place not far from Amsterdam could be somewhere like De Rijp.

Or Enkhuizen or Alkmaar maybe. From Enkhuizen you can visit the open-air museum or take the mini cruise on the Ijsselmeer on the ferry to Stavoren in Friesland and back.

Arnhem, also with an open-air museum, plus WW2 associations.

Further away Breda, Den Bosch or Maastricht to the south.

Leeuwarden is a way away but you could add a visit to the planetarium in Franeker to it. (Just down the road from me!) https://www.eisinga-planetarium.nl/en/the-planetarium/

A trip out to the Kroller Muller museum.

A bike ride if you are up for it.

Rotterdam if you want modern and vibrant.

Going someplace ” “outdoors” is a great option.
I don’t cycle , the ferry would be a nice change ….depends on the weather and ease of getting places .
I will be staying in the Museumplein part of Amsterdam ,
revisiting museums is my main focus but not the only interest.

Consider Enkhuizen, just a train ride from Amsterdam

On our second trip to The Netherlands we stayed in Leiden, a canal laced university town. We loved our stay! From Leiden we easily visited Delft, The Hague, Rotterdam and nearby Kinderdijk, site of 19 historic windmills in their original locations. The trains made it easy to see a lot.

Delft. Vermeer. 'Nuff said.

Mauritshuis museum..loved it !

If you've never visited the Kroller Mullee Museum, I would recommend doing so. The setting in a national park is outstanding and without a doubt, a world-class art collection on display.

Others have suggested Enkhuizen and I second that. I think the sailing times of the ferry to Stavoren are not suitable for a daytrip.
You could even do a daytrip to the island of texel. Train connections to Den Helder from Amsterdam are frequent and straightforward. Frequent ferries to Texel too until late in the evening. The ferry ride takes about 25 minutes. You can rent bikes immediately off the ferry in Het Horntje. Texel is special because it contains all classic Dutch landscapes in concentrated form.

My wife would not allow us to go to the Netherlands and not visit Mauritshuis, her favorite museum in the world.

We stayed several days in Leiden and did a day trip to Delft and very much enjoyed it.

I totally agree, well worth the visit!
