A day on Kos, worth it ? Just be Kos!

Sorry bad pun, my ferry schedule (and Fodors helper) advise that I cannot get a ferry directly from Santorini to Marmaris in Turkey, so a day on Kos appears necessary. Your thoughts please.

The Asclepion is there [a nice site on a hill as I recall] -- and downtown there is supposed to be the plane tree under which Hippocrates held office hours. And there is [was?] a bar just opposite it where you can drink ouzo and contemplate whether managed care is an improvement over leeches.

many years ago, maybe 10, i spent several days on kos....we stayed in a hi-rise on the far side from the town and it was quite nice....the ferries are a problem...i was coming from turkey too and at that time they would not speak to each other....in fact they would not stamp your passport, but entry was normal arriving by ferry...just a question at athens airport when we left--how did you get here...?? the town is small and i am sure you can find a simple place to stay...

I stayed for a week in Kos Town last May. Kos is popular in UK for a beach/pool type of holiday. Kos Town is very lively, and the harbour area is attractive with various yachts and ferry type boats bobbing about. There are loads of ferry trips operating from here to various places round and about. We took the volcano cruise but it was a very long (and cold and choppy!) journey from Kos.

There are various cafes and bars overlooking the harbour which is a pleasant way to spend a few hours. There is a castle/fortress around the harbour which is pleasant to walk round. Also, behind 'Bar Street' (which is where we spent many a raucous night), there are ruins to explore. Just sitting there! and you can walk straight in, no cost, and mouch around. The tree of Hippocrates is here too.
