A day in Frankfurt
Hi Everyone....
I am hoping for some tips and ideas on what to do in Frankfurt for a day..... We arrive in Frankfurt at 11.10am on Wednesday 10th Feb from Calgary and have a connecting flight to Johannesburg that leaves at 20:50pm... We are wanting to get out of the airport and stretch our legs for awhile. We are first time travellers and have never done anything like this before so any and all tips on how to get around and must see sights would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advanced....

In the airport, you go the the Regionalbahnhof. From there, every few minutes either a RB or a S train departs to Hauptbahnhof (main station). The train ride takes 10 or 12 minutes. Before you board the train, you buy a ticket at a ticket machine.
From the Hauptbahnhof, you can do several things:
- Walking or taking the Underground train U5 to Dom/Römer. This is the historical heart of the city and you can walk around a bit.
- Walking over the pedestrian bridge at Moselstraße over the river to the Schaumainkai. There you find a row of fine museums. It is up to your interests which museum you visit - perhaps a good idea for a cold February day.

What traveler above says---but----If you want some "help" and expert guide, check out Frankfurt on Foot http://www.frankfurtonfoot.com/private-tours They can arrange layover/private tours, even meeting you at the airport. (Their most excellent daily 3-4 hour walking tour is at 10:30, so you can't make that).

Another option to get warmed up after a walk through town is the palms garden:

I assume you might be ready to leave FRA at about 12:00 and will need to be back at FRA by around 18:30.
From FRA's Regionalbahnhof to Dom/Römer takes roughly 20-25 minutes with a change to the U-bahn in the middle. That's one possibility.
Another option might be a direct train into Mainz, which is just west of the airport on the Rhine River. Mainz is a much smaller city with a large zone for pedestrians only and a good variety of tightly-packed sightseeing, shopping, and dining options. Get off the S-train at the "Roman Theater" stop, walk a couple of blocks, and you'll be in this zone.

Neglected to mention... The Mainz Roman Theater station is the first S-train stop in Mainz and also just 20-25 minutes from FRA airport's Regionalbahnhof station. And there's a Roman theater there that was recently excavated.
