A day in Antwerp
We are spending 3 nights in Amsterdam, then on to Brugges for 2 nights, then 1 night in brussels and flying home from there. We are taking the train from Amsterdam to Brugges. Is it feasible to get off in Antwerp and spend the afternoon before going on to Brugges? We are traveling light, but will have some luggage.

There are luggage lockers in the Antwerp railway station, so it's perfectly feasible to leave your luggage there. The train station is walking distance from the historical center, through the main shopping street, called Meir. You can also take an underground tram (kind of a primitive metro) to the Groenplaats.

Antwerp is one of the most interesting cities in Belgium: beautiful medieval towm centre, magnificent cathedral and churches, many old and new museums, vibrant modern sections. For the last several years, I always stayed at Antwerp for touring around Belium.

YES!!! We did the same thing in '94 on way to Brussels from Amsterdam. Luggage in a locker at the train station-an incredible piece of architecture in itself. Spent a wonderful whole day in Antwerp, and we are impressing the same on our cousins who will have only time for 1 day trip from Amsterdam. It is a very pretty city, upscale shops and the great cathedral and Rubens' house.

Thank you all. We are trying to make the most of our short week. This sounds great.

I believe the train from Amsterdam - Brugge stops in Antwerpen-Berchem, not Antwerpen-Centraal. If you want to visit Antwerp, you'll have to take a short train ride from Berchem to Centraal. There are luggage lockers at the Centraal station. |
