A castle day-trip from Paris?

If we wanted to go see a medieval castle as a day trip from Paris, which one would you recommend? Also, how would we get there? Sorry for the vague question - I just got thinking about it this morning. Thanks.

Before actually leaving Paris, you could visit Chateau de Vincennes and the neighboring Parc Floral (Bois de Vincennes)...

The castle at Angers is an easy day trip--1.5 hours by TGV from Paris. You could explore the castle and its Apocalypse tapestries, enjoy lunch in any of several excellent restaurants (at very modest prices)like La Ferme or Castel Boeuf, sample Loire Valley wines for free at the Maison du Vin across the street from the castle, take in the flora and fauna at the beautiful Jardin des Plantes, and walk the cobblestone streets of the medieval quarter.
Reminder, the chateau in Angers is a real defensive chateau. It's not a "jewel box" pleasure chateau like Chenonceaux or Azay le Rideau.

Thank you!

BTilke:
What does that mean, a defensive chateau vs. a jewel box? Are these castles open for tour I presume? Thanks again!

Btilke:
I just looked up the TGV train prices - does $164 USD sound about right? (Sounds expensive to me!)

wliwl, I think BTilke means an utilitarian fortress type castle(defensive) vs. an opulent palace type castle (jewel box).

See if you can find a "Prem" fare on the French train site. You will save considerably.

I got a better fare on www.voyages something or other. 70€. Still pretty steep (there's 4 of us). Can one rent a car in Paris without going to the airport? Maybe that would be cheaper.

Hi,

Everyone's idea of a "medevial castle" can be quite different from that of another person's concept.

If you go to:
http://www.casteland.com

you will find in English a complete listing, by region with numerous pictures,of all types of castles in France.

Once you identify several that fit your idea of a "special castle to visit", you can check back with the message board should you need help working out the easiest way to reach your destination.

We happen to be partial to Pierrefonds, which is northeast of Paris, but best reached by car.

You should check the car rentals. If going to Angers, you would pass by Chartres, whose cathedral should be seen. Of course you can rent a car at almost any train station in Paris. Montparnasse would be the best bet for you. But check the PREM fares on SNCF.com. Taking the train is more relaxing for the driver, and it goes faster.
