A.C. Rent a car for one day - do it from the states, or wait 'till I get there?

Hello Hello.

My wife and I will be in the Amalfi Coast for two weeks in September. We'll be relying on public transport for most of our touring, but will probably want to rent a car for two individual days, once in the first week, and once in the 2nd week.

Should I try to arrange for a car ahead of time with one of the large web rentals, or simply wait until I get there and go with a local rentor?

Thanx

It is always best to book here before you go.
I have returned a rental car in Sorrento with no problems. I sure renting one wont be a problem either.
I sure there are several locations to choose from.

Good luck.

Conventional wisdom is that it is very, very difficult (translation: impossible) to get a good deal on a one-day rental. Costs the same as a three-day rental. One possible angle is to get a Rail'n'Drive package from RailEurope.com

Like getting the train travel free if you can use it, and if you plan to rent two one-day rentals.

Best wishes,

Rex

Joe - Bear in mind that the main rental locations are in Sorrento and Salerno.

Not very convenient if you're staying somewhere in the middle ...

In Positano there is a local rental company which rents Smart cars.

As Rex says, a one-day rental can be expensive.

Hi joe,

Not only are one-day rentals expensive, it is very difficult to arrange.

Call Autoeurope, 1-888-223-5555, and see what they can do for you.

Where are you planning to go that you will want a car?

joe, we did a one day rental out of Sorrento this past November. I arranged the rental ahead of time. The smart car we drove made driving the coastal roads great fun. Our cost to rent the car was about 75 USD. Deborah

DeborahAnne - thanx - what website did you reserve the car thru? AutoEurope.com will only accept 3 day rentals. Did you pick it up in Sorrento?

Thanx for any info!!!!

Joe, let me try to find if for you, it was with AutoEurope but I didn't arrange it through them. I'll have to look back in my notes and get back to you. Our 1 day rental cost 72 USD and it included all necessary insurance. Remember for Italy you will need an international driving permit which is good for one year. Deborah

Joe, right now I can't find the company through which I secured the one day rental. Yes, we did pick it up and drop it in Sorrento. I did google Sorrento car rental and got www.argusrentals.com They will do a 1 day rental from Sorrento. I just put in a date and came up with prices of 45 and 50 USD per day for an economy car, maybe this will help you. I will post the rental company we used as soon as I find it. Sorry, I can't recall it right now. Deborah

joe, I can do better I found the link we used to rent the car. Hope this works for you http://www.sorrento.it/english_versi...index_auto.asp This should take you to a rental through autoeurope. It was a very smooth one day rental for us. Have a great trip. Deborah
