Frankfurt Hahn to Heidelberg and In Between
Hello,
A friend and I will be arriving in Frankfurt Hahn airport in late November and will be making our way to Heidelberg. We would like to make some stops along the way, but want to go via public transportation rather than renting a car. Can anyone make any recommendations? We are interested in history, walking tours, Christmas markets (if any are open that early), wine, etc. We have about 4 days to make this trip. Thanks in advance for any help!

There is bus service from Hahn to Heidelberg via Mannheim. It takes about 2 1/2 hrs and costs €18. See www.hahn-airport.de.

You can also go to Mainz by bus (€11 per person), and then go from there by train with a Rhineland-Pfalz-Ticket for €25 for both of you. The RLP-Ticket will give you unlimited on/off travel on regional trains in Rheinland-Pfalz all day.
The RLP-Ticket is valid to the Hbf in Mannheim; you will need to pay extra for the S-Bahn to Heidelberg.

I'd take the bus to Mainz. Good Christmas market there and in Ruedesheim. Daytrip north by train along the Rhine to Braubach for Marksburg Castle and the Rhine villages of Boppard, St, Goar, Bacharach, Oberwesel. Then head to Heidelberg after a couple of days.

I agree with the suggestion to go to Mainz initially. From there there are many options. Wurzburg is a beautiful city to the east along the Main with lots to see including the huge Baroque palace by Bathasar Neuman and the Mainfrankisches museum with great artwork including a collection of beautiful sculptures by Tilman Riemenschneider, the master of Wurzburg. The city is also a center of wine production
