A brief but selective report on our Sicilian sojourn

panecott - this was the first time we ever had any trouble with a car rental! We were shocked as there was no way we could deny something -- it felt like a scam, but I can't be sure. Fortunately, our CC covered the cost, so we didn't pay anything extra, but as I said, it soured us a bit. I would just be sure to check the car a little more carefully and document anything that might be considered damage, however minor.
annhig, wishing you both well! Enjoy the planning and traveling to your upcoming trip to Switzerland!

Thanks, progol.
I usually do inspect the car carefully at the time of rental. Maybe this time I'll take pictures, just to be safe.
I've taken the package with $ 0 deductible so I assume everything will be covered anyway, but I will double check, and will be careful.
On several occasions, most, in fact, I never even had an inspection when I turned the car in. I was just told to park it and then turned in the keys at a desk. I never felt quite comfortable with that and have always taken lots of pictures, but as I said, I never had a problem. I'll think positively on this trip.

progol: I think it will be Sicily. Actually, it was originally Sicily, but then I second guessed myself and switched to France, thinking it would be "easier."
Now I'm thinking Sicily before I get older. I will be 68 when we go so I don't want to put it off.
Next trip is Southern Utah national parks this year, then Sicily next year. Thanks for this incredible amount of information.
