sorry, progol - I don't mean to hijack your thread - it just occurred to me to post it here in case any of your readers had done this sort of thing.

Ann--why not explore Catania? It's really quite interesting and has great seafood.

Marija - I went through all this on my planning thread but perhaps you can see a way round the problems.

Firstly, we want to hire a car at the airport, as it's a lot cheaper than hiring it days later when we Siracusa, even though we'd be hiring for less time.

Secondly, I don't think that anyone would think was sensible to leave a car full of luggage in the streets of Catania while we go sightseeing/eating lunch.

Thirdly, if we go into Catania from the airport on the bus/taxi, we'd have to walk round with our luggage, as there doesn't seem to be anywhere to leave it [unless you know different]. We'd then have to pug it back to the airport to pick up our car.

So my present plan is to go there as a day trip on the train on the day after we arrive. Possibly.

Unless you can think of a better way of doing it?

annhig,
No problem writing on my thread, though I imagine you'll get better responses if you post it on your own planning thread. Catania sounds interesting, and I'm curious what others would say, so feel free to add to this thread, if so inspired!

I'm sorry to correct the author of such a nice and informative trip report, but I'm going to visit the Archeological Park next month and both the official site and google search page clearly say that on Mondays they close at 13:30.

Thanks, Falcio,
I must've seen what I wanted to see - but why didn't my hotel know the correct time if the correct information was available?!

Falcio, while I'm sure that there is a site that does give the correct hours, I saw this site, which would explain my own mistake:
http://www.regione.sicilia.it/benicu...eapolisENG.htm

But for all park-goers, it definitely closes at 1:30pm/13:30 on Mondays!

Ann--why not spend the first day/night in Catania instead of a day trip? The early morning fish market is awesome. A little more here:

Marija - believe me we thought of it but the problem is that that would now throw out the rest of the trip.

but thanks for the link to your TR which I don't think I'd found.

I've just uploaded photos from Ortygia/Siracusa -- I have not yet identified them, so please forgive me! I will, eventually, but I thought it would give you all a flavor of Ortygia - a beautiful and sultry town!

(hopefully, this will work!)

Many thanks, annhig!

I'm trying to get all of them uploaded soon, but the iPhoto to Flickr interface is testing my patience!

So pleased to find your photos posted, Paule, wonderful. You compose so nicely, it really gives a sense of life, as well as the architecture and setting.

Annhig, I'm guilty of collecting itineraries that I will probably never get to in my lifetime, but I checked my Sicily 'ideas' list and Catania is on there, for the market, historical sites, and those street scenes, I thought it all looked so fascinating.

Ah, Aidelaidean, I began organizing my photos because of you! I probably wouldn't have gotten around to it for quite a while except for your gently nudging me to post them!

kja,
If you look at my trip report thread, I've posted my photos from Ortygia, and a number of the hotel and it's views. I hope you enjoy!
