Am thinking of booking a trip to Florence and Venice in November, 3 nights in Florence and 3 nights in Venice. I've heard there can be flooding in Venice at this time. Would we be better off staying in Florence and doing a day trip to Venice? Any advice would be appreciated.

I would stay in both places. The flooding is tidal and will come and go. It's better to experience Venice overnight--walking the quiet alleys with lights sparkling on the canals. . .

Ellenem is right, the flood is tidal, by 9 or 10 am you can explore Venice. It just means that you'll be starting your days a little later. Just make sure you stay in a hotel that has a good breakfast that you can enjoy slowly. You can also bring those yellow flood boots that the locals wear in the early morning. I enjoy Venice in November as much as in the spring or summer. Less crowd, better hotel prices, better chance of getting upgraded to the suites.

I would do both, also. It's my understanding that aqua alta does not last all that long when it occurs.

I was concerned about the flooding before my trip to Venice last November, but it turned out to be no problem at all. The Venetians are prepared with portable, elevated walkways to keep you high and dry.

Actually, it was quite interesting to experience the tidal flooding, and it made the trip all the more memorable.

Tuki- Definately go ahead and go to Venice. We found Venice in Nov. very "cool"!! The flooding is fascinating to see, the crowds are very low, and the odor from the water is not a problem. When will you be in Florence? We'll be there in Nov. too-
