9e versus 12e in Paris for solo female traveller?

I am looking between two different budget hotels in Paris, and I am trying to figure out which is area is safer. I'll be travelling by myself, female, and I'm my 20s. One hotel is close to the Nation metro stop, although technically closer to pic pus metro, in the 12e. The other hotel is in the 9e closest to Saint Georges metro stop. It seems this hotel is in the middle between the safer end (Opera) and the less safe(?) end of Pigalle.

Both hotels fit in my budget and have very good reviews, which is hard to find in Paris, especially somewhat last minute ($500-600) for 4 nights.

Any advice in deciding between the two - particularly with regards to safety - would be helpful!!!

Thanks!!!

The problem is you are hearing names that don't mean much, like the "Opera area". I stay in that area near the 9th and the Opera isn't any where near it. You have no reason to go up to Pigalle if you don't want to.

Both places are equally safe I'd say. I would not want to stay out near Nation myself as it isn't as convenient. I also like the neighborhood around St Georges better as it is older, of course, so things are smaller in scale and closer together. I think there is more character. Obviously, just looking at a map you can see it is closer to things, also. But both are safe, if that is your main criteria.

oh, I would completely reject the idea that being right around the Opera is safer than being around St Georges metro stop which is a neighborhood residential area, anyway. I don't know why you would think that. The Opera area is full of tourists and major dept stores, etc., so of course, if anything, there would be more pickpocketing and crime around there IMO.

The 9th arrondissement is the arrondissement with the most hotels in Paris (followed by the 10th). So it is a very bustling tourist area, but mostly with European and French tourists. Tons of cafés and restaurants at reasonable prices.

The 12th arrondissement is somewhat more spacious, with most of the hotels and restaurants spread out a bit more as well, but it is an excellent place to stay as well.

And I agree with Christina's analysis of the area. There would definitely be more crime around Opéra than in the area south of Pigalle, not that I would worry about being around Opéra either since I am not and never have been a high end tourist with anything worth stealing.
