9 hour layover in Madrid, what to do?
Hi guys,
We have 9 hours to jet in and out of Madrid on our way to Venice.
Is there a place we must visit? We get in at 10am on Friday morning.
Cheers

If you like painting there is nothing in the world like the Prado Museum -- especially all the stuff by Velazquez and Goya. If you like atmosphere, the plaza mayor is great. Also, look around by the Prado entrance (or ask) and check out the 'topless' buses that make various rides around the city (watch your head! they don't warn you about low overpasses)... because the architecture in Madrid (the buildings from earlier in 1900's) is fantastic.
...there are three routes, and I just kept riding them all day (you only pay one price to ride all day) ... really gives you a sense of the city. If you like food, get some recs for the best tapas bars. Buen viaje!

On August 15 I posted the address for an article in the NYT which should answer your question. You can find it with the title:
Making the Best of a Long Layover
or search on my name.
You may have to register but it's free.

Is there a specific reason you can't book a better connecting flight?
If it can't be changed, is your luggage at least checked thru to your final destination or will you have to have that with you in Madrid?
