<<Try to get a hotel with a pool - kids always like that.>>

You won't find any hotel (or rental) anywhere in France that's stupid enough to open and pay for the upkeep of a pool in April.

Lavender in June could be iffy--July and August are the safest for viewing.

Do your children like castles? One that is being built, and further along than this picture represents:

Between Paris and Guédelon (in the middle of a forest) there is Fontainebleau and Vaux-le-Vicomte, and almost directly west the Loire valley. Perhaps a tour of that area might be better than going farther south.

Lavender in June can certainly be "iffy" - but the Lavendin in the Luberon, Valensole plateau, and Drome should be in bloom. We were in the Drome in late June a few years ago, and about 10% of the Lavendin had already been harvested. We've been in Provence the last week in June perhaps 10 times & we always saw some lavender - although in a few spots it was more green than lavender a few times we were there.

If you plan to spend 9 days in Paris, I personally would recommend that you try to rent an apartment. You will have more room, a (probably small) kitchen to prepare some meals, a refrigerator, etc. I also would recommend trying to find a place away from the touristy areas, such as the 13th, 14th, or 15th. You can always get to the sites you wish to visit by either the metro, or the bus, which are both great (and often fun for kids). You can certainly take a day trip to some place like Versailles (I recommend walking around the gardens as opposed to trying to brave the flood of tourists inside), Chartres, or the chateau at Saint Germain en Laye. All are easily reachable either by the RER or train. Peter Dodd
