800 Telephone Numbers
Can I dial an 800 number from my laptop computer to get stock market data when in London, Paris, Lucerne, and Rome? If I can do it, will this be a long distance call or a free call as it is in the United States?

Hi, Dennis,
"800" numbers are only accessible from within the US (or sometimes all of N. America,) but not Europe.
Some of the brokerages, etc., may have free lines within the UK or France, for instance - you should check with your brokers. Of course all the web-based firms are accessible once you get an access number for an internet connection.

John,

Thanks for your reply. When you say that 800 numbers are not accessbile from Europe, does this mean that I won't be able to connect at all? Or will I be able to connect but will be charged a fee?

Dennis
I can't say if this is universal, but I've never been able to connect with any 800 number from Europe. I don't think the tarriff allows it.
Why not call the companies in question and ask them?

Dennis: There was a thread in either rec.travel.europe or rec.travel.air about calling 800 numbers from Europe. I *seem* to recall someone stated there is a number you call in the US that can connect you to the 800#'s. Of course it's a toll call and *might* be thru a specific phone co. (ATT, MCI, etc). Try posting on those NG's. HTH Regards, Walter
