8 days -- Prague and ???

My boyfriend and I are thinking about doing 8 days in Prague and another city during the first week of September. Problem is, we're having trouble deciding on the second city. He's been to Vienna and Budapest (also Prague, but he's happy to go back provided the city we pair it with is someplace he's never been). We've considered Berlin, but that's not top on my list. Any thoughts as to where to do the second half of our trip? One idea we've had is Salzburg. Any thoughts or suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Until I got near to the end of your post, I thought "Berlin" (partly because it's one of my favourite cities) so I'd be intrigued to know why you've discounted going there?

I think these two cities would make a great contrast for a two-city trip. How do you plan on travelling between Prague and your chosen city?

I suppose it's hard to suggest places without knowing what you are looking for as there are lots of possible places that come to mind. Relaxing? Museums? Art? Nightlife? Small/big city?

Thanks very much for your reply. The Berlin thing is, for me, a complicated one. My mother is a Holocaust survivor, and, despite the rational side of me that knows full well that this is another generation and a completely different Germany, I still have hesitation about going there. I know it's an irrational thing, but it's one borne of a deep emotional conflict. Sorry, don't mean to get too heavy here. My boyfriend is eager to go to Berlin, and I am intellectually curious, as I hear it's become quite a hot city in many regards. Would be interested in hearing your thoughts about it.

As for what we're looking for, we both love art, museums, music, walking, as well as seeing beautiful scenery. Big v. small is not the determining factor for us, though we would like to find someplace that would be a good pairing for Prague.

We're not quite sure how we will travel between Prague and the other city. Probably by air or train.

Thanks again.

I combined Prague with Krakow in our 10 day trip last week. We liked Krakow a lot and the people were very nice and food was inexpensive. Daytrip to Auschwitz was very moving.

I agree. Poland. and not just Krakow!

Best wishes,

Thanks very much for the suggestions. As it turns out, he's also been to Krakow (though I'm eager to go). I'm now reconsidering Berlin, as it seems to make the most sense.
