My husband and I have stayed in Pisa twice and made it a base for train travel as we prefer to not drive. We had some wonderful food, inexpensive meals in the university area and nice walks through pedestrian areas at the end of our traveling days. We stayed at the Royal Victoria Hotel and loved its old world charm.

We visited Cinque Terre, San Gim, Lucca, Florence (a quick revisit for an exhibit) and Fiesole, Viareggio (beach there), and Siena. We flew into Pisa and out of Venice.

You can drive or take the train from the west coast of Italy to Bologna if you want to go somewhere for great food. Bologna is known as one of the great food destinations in italy.
