My husband and I are planning to go to Greece from Aug. 28-Sept. 5. Since we are limited on time, we are thinking of seeing Athens, Mykonos, Santorini and possibly a night in Naxos (if time permits). Our plan is to take the fast ferry from Athens to Mykonos and then the other islands and flying from Santorini back to Athens. How many days should we spent in Athens, Mykonos and Santorini? Should we stop in Naxos? I'd appreciate any hotel recommendations or areas that we should stay in.

Ooh boy. I don't know Greece at all but I have traveled a bunch and I think you have too many places planned for 8 days. It looks like you actually have 7 nights - is this correct? I'd choose two places, Athens and an island. Otherwise I think it'll be too rushed.

You have to consider the time it takes to travel between islands (even fast ferries take time) as well as flying (time spent getting to airport, security, etc).

Choose two places and be happier.

FYI - my kids (21, 22) are in Santorini right now and originally planned to add Mykonos to their itinerary. They are glad they stuck with Athens and Santorini. Actually, they loved Athens but wished they had more time in Santorini. Remember that it will take about 1/2 day or more to change locations.

Remember that every change of location will use the better part of the day in travel, transfers, checking in/out of hotels, etc. With your proposed itinerary, half of your trip will be devoted to getting from one place to another and leave little time for sightseeing and relaxation. One night in Naxos would be pointless, as you would lose at least half a day getting there from Mykonos, and another half day going on to Santorini, and have no time at all do do anything on Naxos itself.

I agree that one island plus Athens is all you should consider doing on such a short trip. Should you decide on Naxos, you could still do a day trip from there to Mykonos/Delos or Santorini. Should you decide on Mykonos or Santorini, be aware that it will still be <I>very</I> busy on those islands, while Naxos will less so.

Thanks for your responses. We will nix Naxos from our plans. Maybe we can add a day or two to our trip to be able to see Mykonos, Santorini and Athens. Any suggestions on where we should stay in Mykonos or Santorini? Should we stay in the main towns of the islands or stay somewhere like Kamari or Oia in Santorini?
